- Project Summary
Rina will be partnering with the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF) and the Filipino Citizen Science Network to take advantage of citizen science momentum while giving practitioners tools to sustain work towards community based conservation. To accomplish this, Rina will conduct citizen science focus groups for collaboratively managed marine protected areas to ensure that cross cultural considerations have been made regarding the overall goal of creating cross-cultural citizen science models and research protocols. Poor management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Philippines has resulted in the serious degradation of the Philippines’ bio-diverse resources, unduly impacting indigenous people and fisher folk. Rina’s project is based upon the importance of participatory data collection in the form of citizen science as an important and helpful tool in the management of MPAs. Collaborators: CSU researchers, the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF), Philippines; and The Nature Conservancy.
