Participatory Mapping: Examples and Tips for Engaging with the Public and Volunteers to Create Impactful Maps and Spatial Data

The Western Collaborative Conservation Network’s (WCCN) GIS working group is proud to present a Participatory Mapping Webinar on October 26, 2023 from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm MDT. This webinar will be led by Dr. Tania Hernandez, Aryn Musgrave, and Jeny Davis from Desert Botanical Garden (DBG), covering two of their participatory mapping projects – the Saguaro Census and the Saguaro Inventory. These projects span a spectrum of participation and tools. The Saguaro Census utilizes carefully crafted outreach materials to engage the general public and trained volunteers to map urban saguaros via iNaturalist. The Saguaro Inventory engages volunteers using ArcGIS FieldMaps and the ArcGIS Enterprise system to gather detailed data about saguaros on Desert Botanical Garden’s property.

Join us to learn about (1) engaging the public in research, (2) working with volunteers to increase your capacity to gather needed data, and (3) the methods/tools that Desert Botanical Garden has used for these projects so that you can too!
