“I arrived in Colorado in the early stages of changes that are the focus of the new book A Watershed Moment: The American West in the Age of Limits. The essays in this book are grounded in specific places and communities. They share the history and the challenges of those places. And they show people working together across differences, often in demanding situations. While the essays don’t offer easy solutions, they do illustrate, as co-editor Robert Frodeman writes, “small steps toward a better future.”

“Whether or not you are from the West, you may find, as I did, some value in these essays. You may also find hope. As Mills and Stark say at the end their essay, a different, more just, and more sustainable future is possible.” John Sanderson, CCC Director

This month, we are reflecting on hope. Throughout John’s letter (see excerpt above) and the rest of the newsletter, we are exploring what it means to define hope, not as a concept, but as a verb

We hope this update finds you well.

Yours in conservation,
